Fixing their quarterback roller coaster was the No. 1 priority in the offseason. Blake Bortles was released in March and the Jags signed free-agent QB Nick Foles (Philadelphia) a day later. Foles, the No. 2 QB with the Eagles, helped them win the Super Bowl in 2017 and kept things interesting for them in the 2018 postseason. Now he has a team of his own again.
Will he have the magic he had in Philly? It’s tough to say, as his best days at the office have come with Philadelphia. A one-year run with the St. Louis Rams wasn’t special. Then he played backup in Kansas City for a year. His 2018 numbers were solid in five starts, hitting 72.3 percent of his passes for 1,413 yards with seven touchdowns and four INTs.
With the Jags, they want Foles to guide the ship, not carry it.
For that to happen, Part I: Third-year RB Leonard Fournette needs to live up to his potential. He has yet to play a full 16-game season and only managed 439 yards and 3.3 yards/carry a year ago. It’s a make or break year for Fournette. Defenses, however, will respect Foles more than they did Bortles, which should open some holes.
For that to happen, Part II: The defense needs to shine again. They only gave up 19.8 points/game and 311.4 yards/game a year ago, in the top-five of the league in both categories. But they only had 37 sacks on the year, tied for 22nd. Star CB Jalen Ramsey and company will need to talk less and play more focused in ’19.
Which Jaguars team will show up in 2019? Can Foles lead the Jaguars to the promised land?

Nick Fowles is the Jacksonville Jaguars QB
The debate surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars has been about Blake Bortles for far too long. They tried to convince themselves he was the guy to lead the franchise. They were very wrong and have finally moved on. Out goes Bortles and in comes former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles.
There is obviously a huge sense of expectation surrounding the arrival of Foles. Compared to Bortles, he is a massive upgrade. The thing is that Jacksonville Jaguars fans need to beware. Foles is much better but he isn’t a top tier quarterback. In Philadelphia, he played behind one of the best offensive lines in the NFL and also had a very good group of receivers with a Pro Bowl tight end. That will not be the case here in Jacksonville and he can only do so much.
The Wide Receivers and Offensive Line Are Below Average
The first problem for Foles are the players at the skill positions. Leonard Fournette has not been consistent or healthy lately and it doesn’t help that his offensive line is not very good. They aren’t the worst in the league but they are in the bottom half without a doubt.
Then there’s the wide receiver group that is easily bottom 5 in the NFL. The Jacksonville Jaguars will need to be careful about protecting Foles. They will also have to be very creative because they legitimately do not have a single Pro Bowl level player anywhere on their offense. As usual, this is still a defensive team.
The Jacksonville Jaguars Are Still One of the Best OnDefense
As bad as things look on offense, this defense is still one of the NFL’s best. They don’t have any weakness and it starts up front with their run defense. On all levels of this unit, they are solid against the run. One area for concern here could be a lack of depth at defensive tackle.
The real strength of this defense will be it’s pass rush. Calais Campbell is still one of the best in the league although he is getting up there in age. They will need someone else to step up and they have just the man to do it. Yannick Ngokoue has all of the tools to take over as the number pass rusher on the team. He has elite potential and is also in a contract year. Look out for him to have a breakout season.
They will miss Telvin Smith
The fact that Telvin Smith will sit out the season will have an effect on this team. He is one of the best linebackers in the league but they should be able to cope. They still have Miles Jack who is approaching an elite level. They also drafted Josh Allen although they will need to figure if he’s better at linebacker or edge rusher. Either way they’ve got young guys with lots of potential.
Their secondary led by Jalen Ramsey is still elite. Ramsey does a lot of talking but that’s because he can back it up. He is one of the few true shutdown corners in the NFL. On the other side AJ Boye makes this one of the best one two punches in the league at corner. What this unit lacks is depth but as far as their starters, these are two of the best in the business.
Overall Outlook for the Season
Jaguars Vegas Odds 2019
The Jacksonville Jaguars are still the same team with one major change. There’s no more blaming Blake Bortles. They will need to get back into the playoffs or all the money they are paying Nick Foles makes very little sense. The problem for Foles is this is still one of the worst offenses in the league unless he really can produce magic. It seems unfair to expect Foles to be a savior and for that reason the Jacksonville Jaguars come in at No.22 in our 2019 NFL Team Previews.
